Sami's Birth

By big brother Mohammad El-Abid, 10 years old

I have always wanted a brother or a sister since I was six years old. My mom tried to get pregnant when I was 9. My mom tried a lot of ways to get pregnant. We also went to the doctor a lot!! My mom took pills to help her get pregnant. We watched her spit and take her temperature to see if she could get pregnant. The day came when my mom showed me a pregnancy test. I was already feeling that this day was weird. Then I found out my mom was having a baby. I was the first my mom told about her being pregnant.

I was happy but felt my mom might be tricking me. She likes to play tricks on me all the time, and I thought this might be one of them. I thought she wasn't really pregnant. But then I started to believe that she is really pregnant after she showed me the pregnancy test information on the box. I thought my life was going to change a lot. I was also previously watching a show on TV about animal birth. It made me think about Sami coming out of mom. That seemed to be very gross. I didn't want to watch something like that.

Mom's pregnancy felt like a short time. I went to every doctor's visit with my mom and dad. I got to hear the heartbeat. I also got to see that it was a boy in the first ultrasound. Several months later, my mom had to have several ultrasounds. We thought my brother was butt first. I got to feel him kicking my mom. I took a class on babysitting to get ready for him. I couldn't wait for him to come!!!! It was so excited.

We prepared for Sami. We went and got a stroller. I got to pick out 3 things for him. We got his room ready. We sanded and painted it. We put his socks, outfits, hats, and diapers where it belongs. We had 2 baby showers. We must have received a lot of things for Sami!!! There was so much stuff that our car was full on the way back home from the bay showers. Every week for the last month of my mom's pregnancy, I wrote email updates about my brother showing how I felt about the pregnancy, how long until his due date, how many stuff he received in the baby shower, and other cute things. People would ask me if I was ready or happy to be a big brother.

The day Sami was born, I had a friend over. We watched the "Terminator 3" movie. Then my friend left. We went ahead and started to watch "Bowling for Columbine." Twenty minutes through the movie, my mom said she had a pain. So we went for a small walk. Then we went back in. My mom and dad thought it was false labor. So they did a drill for the real thing. I was downstairs watching TV. I had the Walkie Talkie. My mom said something. But I didn't understand. So I went upstairs and saw water coming out of her. It looked like pee. I saw my mom's umbilical cord. It looked like a tail when it was still in her after it was cut from Sami. I called our neighbor. She came hopping. I told her that the placenta was not out yet. When Sami was out, he cried a little, not a lot. And then I went to feel him. The whole time I was crying and smiling at the same time. I also told my grandpa on Yahoo! Instant Messaging when the water bag broke and when Sami was born.

I called a number of people. I only reached two of them. On of the two was the same neighbor who came over hopping. She came back again. But this time, she wasn't hopping. I told my dad that she was downstairs. He brought Sami down. She stayed for awhile. After she left, we got to play with Sami.
