Lori was disturbed by this "quote." Below is the letter Lori sent to the Times
soon after the article was published.
To the Editor:
My husband and I were interviewed for an article published May 7, 2002, "When
Giving Birth, Opting to Go It Alone." I would like to clarify the words that
were attributed to me. It was implied through editing that I did not fully
consider the consequences of my decision. On the contrary, every aspect of my
decision was carefully considered beginning many years before I gave birth to
my son alone. The key to my raw birthing experience was responsibility. Only I
was responsible for birthing my baby. No midwife, doctor, husband, or machine
could do that for me. I faced every fear I had long before labor. I faced them,
asked what they held for me, and let them go. Interference creates fear. Fear
creates complications in birth. Shed personal and cultural fears, and birth is
raw beauty.
